Menthol Crystals (USP)
Wild Herb USP menthol crystals are made from steam distillation of the oil of Mentha arvensis and Mentha piperita, wild mint plants. The essential oil obtained is then subjected to freezing temperatures, which create the crystals. The strength and type of menthol on the open market varies. Our pure menthol contains 99.5% L-menthol.
Menthol crystals are clear with a strong minty aroma resembling peppermint. The crystals are soluble in alcohol, essential oils and carrier oils but almost insoluble in water and glycerin. Melting point is approximately 105 to 107 degrees F. Menthol should be stirred very well to ensure it is fully dissolved to avoid skin reactions.
Menthol is commonly added to peppermint formulations to enhance the cooling and refreshing experience. In formulations such as ointments, liniments and other relating solutions, common usage rate is 5 to 20 percent. Menthol has also been historically used as an analgesic.
When used in soap making, it is usually best to add the menthol during the oil phase so that it does not interfere with the action of the lye in the water phase.
Our menthol crystals are all natural and sold by weight.
